EADG#BE | EADA♭BE Raised G - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The G string being tuned to G# allows for easier open chords and extensions when playing in the key of E major. Open chords are easier in this tuning because it raises the third string from the minor 3rd of the key (G) to the major 3rd of the key (G#), allowing it to be left unfretted in open chords that are fretted higher on the neck. Certain chord extensions are easier because an E major chord now only requires two fingers on the fretboard, same with Amaj7, etc.
